Healthy skin is slightly acidic. In a study of 330 adults, the skin surface's natural pH averaged about 4.7. COSRX formulates this cleanser at pH 5.31 ± 1.00: mildly acidic, as the name promises.

What it does
COSRX names betaine salicylate, together with tea tree oil, as the key ingredients meant to soothe skin and support a clear-looking complexion.
What it can’t do
It sits near the end of the ingredient list and is rinsed off after a short massage, so don't expect it to work like a leave-on BHA treatment for breakouts.

INCI: Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil

What it does
In a 45-day placebo-controlled trial of 60 people with mild to moderate acne, a 5% tea tree oil gel left on the skin reduced lesion counts more than placebo.
What it can’t do
That trial used a 5% gel left on the skin. Here, tea tree oil appears late in the ingredient list of a wash-off cleanser and its concentration isn't disclosed, so this cleanser is not an acne treatment.

How long to wait

A cleanser works on the day you use it. Give any overall change in how your skin feels at least 4 weeks of consistent use before judging it.

How to use

Morning and night, after removing makeup. Wet your face and hands, work a small amount into a lather, and massage it in gently, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Rinse with warm water. (Directions from COSRX.)

Good to know

  • If your skin reacts easily, test it first. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests applying a small amount to your inner forearm twice a day for four to five days.
