Bakuchiol

Plant-derived retinol alternative

What it does
In a 12-week double-blind trial, 0.5% bakuchiol reduced wrinkle area and hyperpigmentation about as much as 0.5% retinol, with less scaling and stinging.
What it can’t do
One trial of 44 people, using a cream, is promising, not proof that bakuchiol replaces retinol for everyone.

What it does
Ceramides are part of the lipid layer between skin cells that slows water loss. Well-formulated ceramides are used to help repair a damaged barrier.
What it can’t do
Supporting the barrier is not treating a skin condition. Eczema or persistent irritation needs a dermatologist.

How long to wait

The bakuchiol trial measured results at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Give it 12 weeks before you judge it.

Good to know

  • Contains lavender and bergamot oils, plus the fragrance components limonene and linalool. If your skin is reactive, test it on your inner forearm twice a day for four to five days first.
